BEST THINGS TO DO IN KANCHANABURI

Was browsing my gallery and came across memorable photos of the recent trip to Kanchanaburi – 3 hours (approximately 150km) from the capital, Bangkok! Kanchanaburi is rarely found amongst your itinerary of Bangkok city tours and Bangkok itself. Take the unbeaten path to visit Kanchanaburi and a walk down World War II.

KANCHANABURI is located to the west of Bangkok and is famous for the River Khwae Yai (Kwai), the Death Railway and its idealistic national parks that house an array of lush riverside resorts. Aside from the historical touch of the place, adventure seekers would love to indulge in the treks, cave kayaking and bamboo rafting along River Kwai.

KANCHANABURI is a year round destination but my personal favourite is from the month of November to February when the climate is cooler. Summer – around April is relatively a peak season and Kanchanaburi is among the hottest places to be around Thailand.

THE DEATH RAILWAY

The railway that used Allied prisoners of war [POWs] and Asian labourers to build a rail route between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). Movies were made based on the publication of Pierre Boulle’s book ‘The Bridge Over the River Kwai’ and also a biography from an ex-POW entitled ‘The Railway Man’.
Nevertheless, nothing beats trailing the journey and path by yourself. Visit the Thai Burma Railway Museum to book your train trip down memory lane. Take a self tour around the museum to understand the history and efforts behind the building of the railway and at the end of the trip, book your scenic trip for the following day. You will not be disappointed. While you are here, don’t forget to visit the Hellfire Pass too!
You can catch the train at 06.00 or 10.30am at the main Kanchanaburi Rail Station or from the River Kwai Bridge Station.

ERAWAN NATIONAL PARK & WATERFALL

This fall is multi-tiered and has in total SEVEN(7) tiers and named after the THREE HEADED ELEPHANT GOD - ERAWAN, claimed to be at the highest tier. For those who would love to spend a night camping at the national park premises, make your way to the HQ beside the ticketing counter and book your stay. You can rent tents (150 thb), sleeping bags (25 thb) and also Bungalows for the night ranging from 800 to 4000 thb that accomodate up to 50 pax.

At the Second Tier
The park opening hours are from 8 am to 4.30 pm. There is an array of local shops selling food and snacks at the parking area for your convince. In total the journey up to the highest tier is 1.5km. Year round season Rainy (May - October), Winter (November - January) and Summer (February - April).
Each tier has a name of its own and it would probably take approximately 3 hours, depending on your physical fitness to complete all 7 tiers.

THE RIVER KWAI RESOTEL
I have previously written on the RIVER KWAI RESOTEL stay. It is an amazing place to stay with the family or just the TWO of YOU! A lot more amazing is the Jungle Raft collection, slightly pass the River Kwai Resotel.

The recommended stay in Kanchanaburi can be 3 days 2 nights with an entire day spent in the Resotel and it's activities while the other 2 days being spent for the train ride and also the Waterfalls. Other recommended places are:KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY, MUEANG SINGH HISTORICAL PARK and SAI YOK NOI WATERFALL.
